If you’ve been thinking about trying an injectable treatment but aren’t sure where to start, you’re in good company. Botox and dermal fillers are two of the most popular aesthetic treatments out there and they’re often confused for each other. They’re actually quite different, and understanding how each one works can help you feel confident walking into your first consultation.

Here’s a straightforward breakdown.

Botox: Relaxing the muscle

Botox (and similar neuromodulators) work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause expression lines. When you squint, frown, or raise your eyebrows repeatedly over the years, those movements create lines especially on the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes.

Botox doesn’t fill those lines. It softens them by reducing the muscle movement that causes them. Results typically show up within a few days and last around three to four months, depending on the individual.

It’s also commonly used for: brow lifting, jaw slimming (masseter treatment), excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and lip flipping.

Dermal Fillers: Adding volume and structure

Fillers are an injectable gel most commonly made of hyaluronic acid, a substance your body already produces naturally. Rather than affecting muscle movement, fillers add volume where it’s been lost or enhance areas you want to define.

Common uses include: plumping lips, softening deep folds like the nasolabial lines (the creases from your nose to the corners of your mouth), restoring cheek volume, and smoothing hollows under the eyes.

Depending on the product and the area treated, results can last anywhere from six months to two years or more.

So which one do you need?

Honestly? Many clients benefit from both — but that’s a conversation worth having with a provider, not deciding based on a quiz.

The answer depends on what’s bothering you, what you’re hoping to achieve, and what your anatomy looks like. That’s exactly why we start every new client with a consultation. Dr. Woo will assess your face as a whole, listen to your goals, and walk you through the options that make sense for you.

There’s no pressure to do anything that day. We just want you to feel informed.

A note on safety

Injectables are medical procedures. The skill and training of your provider matters — a lot. Dr. Woo’s medical background means he understands facial anatomy at a deep level, which translates to results that look natural and techniques that prioritize your safety.

We’d love to talk through your questions in person. Book a consultation with us in Rockford or Caledonia.
