Walk into any beauty store and the skincare aisle can feel completely overwhelming. Serums, essences, toners, retinoids, acids it’s a lot. And if you’ve ever bought something because it sounded impressive, only to have no idea how to actually use it, you’re not alone.

The good news? A solid skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, the basics will take you further than you’d think.

Here’s how we’d suggest approaching it.

Step 1: Start with the non-negotiables

Before you add anything fancy, make sure you have these three covered:

Cleanser. Wash your face morning and night. Use something gentle, your skin doesn’t need to feel squeaky clean. That tight, stripped feeling after washing is actually a sign your barrier has been disrupted.

Moisturizer. Even oily skin needs hydration. Skipping moisturizer often makes oiliness worse, not better.

SPF. Every single morning. Sun damage is the number one cause of premature aging, and it’s also the most preventable. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every day even in Michigan winters.

Get those three working consistently before adding anything else.

Step 2: Identify your main concern

Once your baseline is solid, think about what you’d most like to address. Fine lines? Uneven texture? Dark spots? Acne? The answer shapes what you add next.

Vitamin C is a great addition for brightening and protecting against environmental damage. Retinol is one of the most well-researched ingredients for cell turnover and aging, but it requires patience and a slow start. Niacinamide is gentle and helpful for a wide range of concerns.

The key is adding one new thing at a time so you can actually tell what’s working.

Step 3: Know when to bring in a professional

There are things a great at-home routine simply can’t do. If you’re dealing with persistent concerns — crepey skin, volume loss, deeper lines, uneven pigmentation that’s where professional treatments can fill in the gaps.

Medical-grade skincare and in-office treatments aren’t about replacing your routine. They’re about getting results that topical products alone can’t achieve.

At Simply Skin, we love helping clients figure out where they are in their skincare journey and what the next right step might be whether that’s a treatment, a product recommendation, or both.

Curious where to start? Come in for a consultation. We’ll take a look at your skin and talk through what would actually make a difference for you.
